They come into the dentist’s office every day, armed and ready to do battle in your mouth. Their weapons are the latest dental tools and technology; scalers and scrapers, curettes and polishers. They are your valiant dental hygienists, and their mortal enemy is yellow tartar.

Only these unsung heroes are able to remove the cement-like substance from your teeth. Tartar was born of an unholy union between plaque and saliva. Left alone, the mixture becomes an impenetrable armor that no amount of brushing and flossing can defeat. Hardened tartar is an ally of tooth decay and gum disease that helps bacteria adhere to your teeth and attack the gumline—irritating and eroding the gum tissues, trying to expose the roots and unseat the teeth.

What can be done to help our hygienist heroes? Keep plaque off your teeth and don’t allow it to form into tartar. It only takes 48 hours of neglecting to brush in order for plaque to turn into hardened tartar. Maintain a daily regimen of toothbrushing with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Do it at least twice a day, then floss at least once a day. Don’t forget to keep your appointments at the dental office where our hygienists can give you a professional cleaning and fluoride treatment. This is what will keep the plaque off your teeth and tartar under control.
